Flight1 App Detailed Walkthrough: Advanced Features

This section details advanced features for customizing a mission in the Flight1 app:

  1. Advanced Waypoints Customization
  2. Import an Overlay to an Existing Mission
  3. Create a New Mission from an Imported File
  4. Import a File of Waypoints

The advanced import features only work with files with .kml or .waypoints extension. Here are sample files for import into Flight: https://skycatch.app.box.com/s/40m7yvs0lt5gu1ououqw16bh5d0wgu53/folder/47358521625.

1. Advanced Waypoints Customization

This advanced feature enables customization of the position and altitude of individual waypoints in a mission route. Please note that you MUST be a subscriber to the HPP plan and logged in with that account on the Flight1 app to access this feature. Additionally, the Customize Waypoints button can only be viewed on a screen that is at least the size of an iPad Mini tablet (it is not displayed on iPhones).

  1. After creating a mission, tap the Customize Waypoints button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. After tapping the Customize Waypoints button, the app displays the following screen.
  3. Tap, hold, and drag an existing waypoint (indicated by the white, red, or green circles) to a new location; after releasing the waypoint, the app displays the new location coordinates in the mission drawer. To change the waypoint’s altitude, drag and scroll through the horizontal bar to the left and right (altitude can only be changed by increments of 5 feet or 5 meters). After customizing the waypoint, its color will change to pink.
  4. To create a new waypoint and customize its location and altitude, tap on the blue + icon  A new number for the waypoint will appear on the mission route in a pink circle.
  5. To customize this new waypoint, tap, hold, and drag it to a new location. After releasing the waypoint, its new location coordinates are displayed in the mission drawer. To change the new waypoint’s altitude, drag and scroll through the horizontal bar to the left and right. Please note that altitude can only be changed by increments of 5 feet or 5 meters.
  6. Multiple waypoints can be customized. However, to return to the original flight path for the mission, tap Reset all. To return an individual waypoint to its previous setting, tap the X to the right of the waypoint’s information in the mission drawer’s list.
  7. After customizing waypoints, be sure to tap Save and Exit to return to the mission planning page. The app now displays the customized mission route.

2. Import an Overlay to an Existing Mission

After creating a mission route in the Flight1 app, a KML file can be imported to overlay onto the mission route. This advanced feature enables better analysis of the mission route about the area of interest and project site plans.

  1. Upload a .kml file to the iXpand flash drive
  2. Open the Flight1 app
  3. Plug in the iXpand flash drive to the iPad. A pop-up screen will appear. Tap Allow so the iPad can communicate with the iXpand flash drive. The iXpand app will automatically open. (Note: The iPad already comes with the iXpand app installed)
  4. Tap View Files in the iXpand app
  5. Select the desired .kml file, tap Open with, and tap Copy to Flight1

  6. Tap Add overlay file to an existing mission
  7. Choose the mission from the mission list to add the overlay to. The mission name in the list will update and display Plan Created with overlay mm/dd/yy.

3. Create a New Mission from an Imported File

A new mission route can be automatically generated in Flight1 from an imported .kml file. This advanced feature enables an exact mission route that matches an overlay and project site plans.

  5. Select the desired. KML file, tap Open with, and tap Copy to Flight1
  6. Tap Create a new mission from the imported file. The app will display a pop-up window saying “Missions(s) successfully imported to your mission list”. The mission can now be chosen from the list, and further customized.

4. Import a File of Waypoints

A .kml file or .waypoint file can be imported to Flight1 to display control points (ground control points and checkpoints) as an editable mission. This advanced feature enables automatic mission route generation from a known set of control points.

  1. Upload a .kml file or a .waypoint file to the iXpand flash drive (Note: We recommend creating a .waypoints file with APM Planner, and creating .kml files with Google Earth.)

  5. Select the desired. KML or .waypoint file, tap Open with, and tap Copy to Flight1

  6. Tap Create a new mission with an overlay file. The app will display a pop-up window saying “Mission(s) successfully imported to your mission list”. The mission can now be chosen from the list, and further customized.
